High-Interest Savings Account rates are quoted per annum, with interest calculated on the daily closing balance and added to the principal on the last day of each month.
GIC interest rates are quoted per annum, with interest calculated and paid on each 12-month anniversary date, and at the maturity date. Term rates are guaranteed for their specified duration and are not redeemable prior to maturity. The minimum deposit is $1,000.
What these rates mean
Interest rates are the percentage of return you get over a period of time by investing money in a savings account.
Different types of accounts yield different kinds of returns. Choose an Outlook Financial product based on the type of savings goal you have set for yourself, and whether you want to reach those in the short-term or long-term.
The longer the term, the more money you save. When you save your money in a High-Interest Savings Account or GIC, your initial deposit stays in the account while you earn interest on your savings. It doesn’t cost you anything to purchase a GIC, and you can open one with as little as $500.
Here’s a quick example: Let’s say you put $10,000 into a GIC with a 5-year term. If the interest rate is set at 1.7%, that means you’ll earn $170 every year. This will add up over the course of the GIC term, and you’ll earn approximately $850 in total interest.
All deposits, including interest, are guaranteed without limit by the Deposit Guarantee Corporation of Manitoba. No matter where you live across Canada, this promise will serve you well.
